Guest interview Shelly

Hi what is your name and how old are you? I’m Shelley-Georgia King previously Yates, still known as shelldogg and I’m 29! Ekkk old! Tell us a little about yourself, what do you do, why have you started to skateboard and how long have you been skating? I’m a mama to two amazing children, Presley Bleu 2.5 and Johnny Otis 1! I’m a secondary school art and photography teacher. I’ve been skating since I was 14 years old, so 15 years, I started because my brother and dad done it and I was brought up in a household that whatever my brother did u could do! How does it feel to do something as cool as skateboarding? How do your friends and family think about it? “Surely it’s time to quit now,” or “aren’t you too old for that” ... mixed views really, I have the occasional family Member or friend support me but was never for them so never bothered me. Have you had any injuries since you started? Too many, knee surgery as I snapped my ACL, got it replace with 7 strands of my hamstring! My left shoulder is pretty shocking from moving my collar bone a few years back ... always clean a bowl before you skate! Damn bottle Tops! And if so has it deterred you from skateboarding in anyway? When I was 19 I found boys so deterred a little but came back stronger and I don’t skate when I’m pregnant, I think it’s very dangerous and very much against it. How has skating changed you as a person? Completely, I met my partner through skating, wouldn’t have my amazing babies! I like how it made me different to the “normal” girl in the 2000s who wore make up and shopped! I would Wear make up, ship and skate hahaha What do you think about skateboarding being in the olympics now? Personally? I think it’s rad!!!!! I lobe watching people skate and to make them global and for accessible For people who wouldn’t usually view it .... awesome! For people to make good money from it ... awesome! What’s your opinion on the girls skate scene now? Omg it’s grown so much! Not to keen on the “fashion” side of it, no one care what you wear when you skate so don’t get why girls have to “model” but that’s our generation, I rather focus more on the skating than my outfit! Backwards cap all day everyday! Ha who cares Where do you see yourself in the skate scene in 10 years time? Taking my babies to the skatepark and not allowing them home until they can carve like mummy! Haha What advice would you give anyone just starting out, either young or old, to help them keep skating? Headphones in, ignore the bullshit ... skate! There is no rules! Do what you want , ride what brand you want not because someone said it’s cool! Do you think A skate School is a good way of learning? And coaching is needed in skateboarding now? Any final words you would like everyone to know about how you feel about skateboarding? Skateboarding is my medicine, when I feel low I grab my board and headphones and go for a roll ... I feel better! Under the surface of fashion bullshit ... there is an amazing community in skateboarding! Thanks Shelldogg
